Solana Center joins the City of Oceanside in their “Love Your Planet” program!

LYPPlanetTitle

Oceanside is focused on implementing Zero Waste household practices by using the “4 R” strategy—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and ROT. The 4th R will be implemented through residential composting. Participants will learn how to reduce their overall waste, thereby reducing their environmental footprint, through better planning, purchasing, and the introduction of healthy habits into their everyday lives. Program highlights feature a Zero Waste kit that includes tools and strategies to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The composting component will be demonstrated in an engaging, hands-on, team bin building workshop. Composting in particular is key to keeping food waste out of landfills. Americans throw away 40% of the food they produce and/or purchase. Food scraps in landfills generate significant greenhouse gases, and if you asked Mother Nature, this should never be deemed “waste” to begin with! The breakdown of organic matter recycles valuable nutrients back into the soil, while at the same time, improving the soil’s water-holding capabilities.

This 8-week program will serve as a Zero Waste model for Oceanside, with the aim to inspire similar programs in other neighborhoods. Over 25 participating households will receive home Zero Waste kits valued at over $500, which includes everything from compost bins, green cleaning supplies, kitchen recycle kits, reusable bags, and more. Neighborhood team dynamics implemented throughout the program will encourage neighbors to work together and see their results in action at home and in their neighborhood.

We are excited to provide recycling and composting education and training in the form of two workshops, along with continuous support by staff and experienced Master Composters. Direct impacts of the program are estimated at over 250 people. Participants will also be competing in a Zero Waste Challenge where they are encouraged to engage with others about their Zero Waste efforts. Coupling this with significant social media outreach including tweets, blogs and Facebook posts, the program will be shared with thousands!
